Event description
Curious about meditation retreats? Here's your chance to try out the format and get your questions answered.

About this Event

Signing up for your first meditation retreat can be intimidating! Meditation practice in an extended format is one of the most powerful technologies for working directly with our minds and the habits of mind that make life more difficult than it needs to be. In that process there are a lot of challenges, as we come face-to-face with some of the deepest sources of suffering in our lives. Nowadays, a lot of people take the plunge into their first retreat with only guided meditations on apps as preparation, and the transition can be intense, especially when it looks like everyone else on the retreat knows what they're doing!

In this day of practice, we will have time to explore sitting and walking meditation, as well as the cultivation of lovingkindness. There will be instruction in meditation, and a chance to get your questions about meditation and retreat practice answered, including the following:

  • What's the point of meditation? What does it mean to be mindful?
  • What's the best posture for meditating? What do I do about discomfort when I'm sitting?
  • My mind is really noisy: how do I stop thinking?
  • Why do we stay in silence for the whole length of a retreat, including giving up phones and other devices?
  • What's the point of walking slowly on retreat?
  • Why are there Buddha statues, and why do some people seem to bow all the time? Do you have to be a Buddhist to practice meditation in this tradition?
  • What should you be aware of when you're choosing your first retreat?

Although this day is aimed at people who haven't yet gone on retreat, you're still welcome even if you have!

Led by Rachel Lewis. Rachel completed Spirit Rock's Community Dharma Leader program in 2012, as well as its Dedicated Practitioners Program in 2010. She began retreat teacher training at IMS in 2017, and as part of that training has apprenticed with teachers including Adrianne Ross, Tempel Smith, Rick Hansen, Christina Feldman, Kamala Masters, and Joseph Goldstein, on retreats aimed at scientists and young people as well as the general public. She has spent over 470 nights on silent retreat since 2003, including two 3-month retreats. She has taught at Alouette Correctional Centre for Women and in Vancouver and area since 2011, as well as via her alter egos Buddhist Hulk and Bhante Mixalot. Rachel’s day job at VCH is only barely related to her physics PhD. Her interest in bringing music into meditation practice led her to develop a songbook of Buddhist music for choirs. She also maintains BCIMS' Facebook page.
