Event description

Description

Presenters: Kate Perry, Speech and Language Pathologist & Social ABCs Parent Coach, and Kate Bernardi, Social ABCs Parent Coach

Social ABCs is an evidence-based caregiver-mediated intervention for toddlers with suspected or confirmed autism or related social-communication challenges. Developed by a team of Canadian researchers, including Holland Bloorview’s own, Dr. Jessica Brian, it is considered to be a Naturalistic Developmental Behavioural Intervention (NDBI).

NDBIs are evidence-based interventions recommended for toddlers with autism, designed to be implemented in natural settings, build on the child’s interests and motivation, make use of natural opportunities for learning, and use a variety of applied behaviour analysis (ABA) strategies to teach developmentally appropriate skills.

We offer a unique parent training experience where caregivers are viewed as the experts and are coached and supported by highly qualified parent coaches. The content of our service is developmental in nature and involves individual parent/caregiver-child coaching sessions as well as group didactic/education sessions with parents/caregiver-child coaching around emotional regulation, managing challenging behaviours, sharing positive emotion with your toddler, how to encourage play and create social routines as well as the importance of caregiver self-care.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Families of toddlers between the ages of 12-36 months

  • Toddlers who have been flagged by a pediatrician or G.P. as experiencing social communication delays or autism

  • Toddlers must be able to move independently (e.g. scoot, crawl, walk, etc.).

  • One parent/caregiver per child will be coached. The same parent/caregiver must be available for all sessions.

  • Program delivery is in English-only at this time. Parents/caregivers must feel confident learning and communicating with their toddler in English, even if a different language is spoken at home.

We offer families two options to become involved in this program:

Option 1: Social ABCs Parent Group Coaching program (Six Week Program)

Cost: $2500

This option involves at total of 18 hours of direct intervention including one-to-one live practice and coaching at Holland Bloorview with didactic presentations being delivered in a small-group format.

Dates: This program’s group parent/caregiver didactics will begin in March 2020 (exact start date to be determined and is dependent on enrollment), and will take place weekly on Wednesdays from 4:30-6pm. There are 9 individual parent-child coaching sessions altogether: 2x/week for the first 3 weeks of the program, and 1x/week for the last 3 weeks. The parent coach will connect with families over the phone to set up mutually convenient times for the individual sessions, which will take place Mon-Fri during business hours. Prior to the group start, an additional short introductory session will be scheduled. Please note that all the sessions will take place at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, main site.

Please contact Kate Perry (416-425-6220 ext 3256) prior to registering for the program, or for further details/questions.

Option 2: Social ABCs Individual Intervention Program (12 Week Program)

Cost: $5000

This option involves a trained Social ABCs’ parent coach delivering individualized training in the child’s natural environment (e.g.: home/park) and coaching families on ways to engage their children in their natural home environment, within their daily routines and activities such as snacktime, bath time and play. This option includes 39 parent coaching hours.

Dates: Please contact Kate Perry (416) 425-6220 ext. 3256 to further discuss this option and determine which parent coach to best match your family with.
