Description

The Office of Social Innovation and the Yeates School of Graduate Studies are excited to announce the final seminar for this year in the social innovation series for graduate students—Doing Social Innovation Where You Don't Belong.

Social innovation is a centre point of Ryerson’s mission and vision. In this series we understand social innovation to hold a commitment to social justice and social change by recognizing how social problems are rooted in institutionalized values and ideas, practices and structures, entrenched advantage and disadvantage. Social change can happen at many levels, by engaged individuals, groups, organizations and communities, or through changes in beliefs, practices, policies and laws.

Doing Social Innovation Where You Don’t Belong

This session centers on the dilemmas and tensions that arise in the context of embarking on social innovation activities in geographies outside of the innovator’s home.

In this seminar, hosted by Dr. Kiaras Gharabaghi, John C. Eaton Chair in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Community Services and Director, School of Child and Youth Care, we will look at the experience of Social Innovation for Social Justice, a project involving Ryerson students from three faculties engaged in activities in New York City. We will examine the thought process that moved from intervention to narration, and the activities that moved from action to reflection. The presentation challenges conventional, and often market-driven, ideas of social innovation, highlighting instead the ‘social’ context of innovation as an act of celebrating human dignity.

Ryerson graduate students from all disciplines are invited to attend. This series qualifies for Future Smart, so bring your passport to be signed.

A light lunch will be served. Space is limited, so register early!
