Speaker Sessions

The Mustard Seed is hosting Speaker Sessions to bring our community together through education and training on a variety of topics important to our organization. We invite you to explore the issues surrounding poverty and homelessness in Edmonton in an informative and engaging environment.

Speakers

Daniel Muthui

Community Engagement Coordinator, The Mustard Seed

Daniel aims to educate the public on issues relating to poverty and homelessness in Edmonton’s inner city. With a BA in Politics, History and Economics from The King’s University, along with his role as the Community Engagement Coordinator for The Mustard Seed, Daniel is able to challenge the public to not only respond to the needs of those living on the margins, but to also intentionally find their role in ending homelessness.

Jeremiah Basuric

Community Engagement Coordinator, The Mustard Seed

Jeremiah holds a degree in Environmental Studies and Theology from The King’s University. Through his education and experience, Jeremiah works with The Mustard Seed as a Community Engagement Coordinator for the past six years. Jeremiah is also the Campus Pastor of a new church plant in Ottewell, called mosaicHouse East.

Topic

Social Issues Walk

The Social Issues Walk is approximately three hours long through the McCauley, Boyle and Downtown areas. During the walk, we explore some of the reasons behind why people are poor and why they come to the inner city, stopping at key areas of interest including homeless shelters, the former site of tent city, and the new arena district.

To walk the streets of the inner city is a powerful experience, as it can challenge personal prejudices and stereotypes. The walk brings a sense of reality of the harsh conditions that people are living in, as well as the sense of hope that people have, as inevitably we encounter many individuals who share their personal stories of struggle, hardship and joy. Participants are challenged to think about what they can do to motivate change in their own spheres of influence.
