What is Social Media "YOUTH" Camp

Social Media YOUTH Camp (#SMYC) is a one-day series of interactive workshops and talks, dedicated to youth aged 13-19. SMYC covers a number of key issues for helping young people stay safe and get the most out of social media, whether you're researching a school project, connecting with friends or preparing to go out into the job world.

Sessions are held in a casual environment where you can kick-back and take it in or jump in and get involved. There will be musical performances and lots of cool stuff to see in the trade show.

Who Should Attend:

All are welcome to attend however the content is specifically designed for those aged 13-19 who are interested in knowing more about social media, share their experience & learn from each other:

What is online life like for the average young Canadian.

Teens on phonesToday's children & teens are highly connected, mostly through devices that are portable and personal, with multiple platforms to choose from to go online.

According to a recent study by SmartMedia:

  • 49% of Grade 4 students have access to their own phone or someone else's on a regular basis.
  • 1/3 of students have gone online to ask an 'expert' (other kids) about personal problems.
  • 39% of students with cell phones sleep with them in case they get a call or text during the night
  • 78% of students use the Internet to find information about news, health issues & relationships.
  • 95% of Grade 11 students have a Facebook account.
  • 7 of their top 10 websites allow users to share information and content about themselves.
  • 16% of households have NO rules about using the Internet

Speakers inlcude:

Why You Should Attend

While there are real benefits to using sites like Facebook, including access to information, increased communication and creative expression, there can be serious downsides to online sharing too. This level of engagement online increases the risks of cyber bullying, “Facebook depression” (a new phenomenon where “de-friending” and online bullying lead to symptoms of depression), exposure to inappropriate content, and sexting. Just as we prepare for life in the real world, we need to  prepare for life in the online world.

What to Bring

There's plenty of free wifi so bring your favourite device so you can put what you learn into practice or connect with friends. There is a working lunch with Darren and Brandon Laur so bring a lunch if you'd like. There are lots of restaurants and shops in the area but you won't want to miss anything so best to bring some grub.

We are excited to welcome you the first Social Media YOUTH Camp at the 5th annual SMC in beautiful Victoria BC. We look forward to seeing you in Victoria this May.
