Event Details

The people at SocialCoast along with the majority of British Columbians do not want more pipelines and tankers coming to the coast! The challenge ahead of us is to consider alternatives to the lifestyles, energy demands, and social mechanisms of our current society.

Through protest and petition, people have showed their passionate opposition to pipelines coming from the tar sands and fracking projects in northern BC, as well as other extractive, non-renewable and non-consensual industry. Our transition towards a progressive society is an exciting adventure, and there is a vast array of visions for a future that does not include pipelines, tankers, and industry that threatens the land, the coast, and our communities.

On Sunday, Dec.2, the SocialCoast Community Action Bus is heading out on a waste-bio-diesel powered adventure to meet some of the local change makers who have a vision to share and have taken steps towards making solutions a reality.

Trip Details

First stop: Colwood Fire Station’s Solar Hot Water System. Representatives from the fire station will take us on a tour of their buildings solar hot water system and explain how it fits into their communities “Solar Colwood” program.

Second Stop: Solar Car Station and Bakery (and tasty hot lunch). Royal Bay Bakery owner David Grove has installed a solar panel system on his roof, from which he has powered his 100% electric vehicle all year long. He will show us his electric charging station, the panels on the bakery’s roof, and cook us up some solar powered soup, hot cider and baked goods.

Third Stop: Eco Sense. This will be a very exciting stop. Ann and Gord Baird have built one of the most progressive homes in BC. They will take us on a tour of their cob home and show us their living roof, rain water harvesting system, grey water irrigation and off the grid chicken coop! If you need to relieve yourself during the tour, don’t worry, you can do so in their composting toilets :)

Fourth Stop: Victoria Stone Soup at Odd Fellows Hall.  A large component of localizing our energy infrastructure is a transition towards local food.  This is why we will wrap up the trip by heading to a local farm to pick up some produce, and for those interested, will put our veggies in a community soup pot at the Odd Fellows Hall. This Victoria Stone Soup dinner has been organized by Belonging Victoria, and they have a great night of entertainment lined up!
