Soil Health 3 Day Field Tours featuring Odette Menard: Odette Menard is an agricultural engineer who has had a major role in the promotion of soil conservation. Odette is an expert in earthworm behavior and practices that promote health & fertility.

Day 1: July 11, 2022 at Palmer Ranch (Pincher Creek Area)

Directions to Palmer Ranch : Head South out of Pincher Creek on Highway #6 for 25km . Turn East on Township Road 40. Follow that road for 12.5km, you will go past Waterton Colony! Cross a river, then turn south on Range Road 282. Turn West on Township Road 34A, follow road right up to the ranch.

  1. Registration & Coffee at 9:30am - Palmer Ranch (Pincher Creek Area)
  2. Inside presentations at the Palmer Ranch in the morning . Field tours of the Palmer Ranch in the afternoon.
  3. Lunch is provided.

Some Topics Include:

  • Grazing plan-long term
  • Building soil health over time
  • System approach to grazing management
  • Costs effective strategies
  • Stockpiled forage & bale grazing

Day 2: July 12, 2022 at Wheatland County Office and Rod Vergouwen's (Strathmore Area)

Directions to Wheatland County Office : Head East out of Strathmore on Highway #1 for 7km. Turn North on Range Road 243. It's on the first left.

  1. Registration & Coffee at 9:30am- Wheatland County Office
  2. Inside presentations at the Wheatland County Office. Field tours at Rod Vergouwen's (Valley View Ranch) in the afternoon.
  3. Lunch is provided.

Some Topics Include:

  • Enhancing your grazing options
  • Adding to the land's natural value
  • Reclaiming land for production
  • Cover crop silage mix under irrigation
  • Soil Health

Speakers for Day 2 include: Rod Vergouwen, Graydon Garner and Odette Menard.

Day 3: July 14, 2022 at Madden Hall and Olds College Demo Sites (Madden Area)

Directions to Madden Hall: Turn West off Highway #2 on to Highway 574. Follow the 574 for 19.5 km. Turn North on Range Road 30, and its your first right.

  1. Registration & Coffee at 9:30am- Madden Hall
  2. Inside presentations at the Madden Hall. Field tours at Olds College Demo Sites in the afternoon.
  3. Lunch is provided.

Some Topics Include:

  • Research & technology used on Olds College demo sites
  • Soil amendments in perennial & annual stands
  • Virtual fencing collars
  • Grazing & riparian health
  • Advanced Ag & soil carbon
