Event description

Description

You may know the science of how solar PV works, but do you know how it is installed on residences and commercial buildings?

Come out to a half-day (4 hours), hands-on, informative workshop all about solar electricity generation and learn how these systems are installed. There is a lot more to it than just the solar panels!

No prior experience is required from workshop participants. You will explore how solar PV generates electricity, learn about the various components and manufacturers of solar energy products, experience first-hand how a residential solar array is installed, and includes a tour of the 100 kW solar array located on the roof of the Horse Palace at the Exhibition Place.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Pros vs Cons of Solar Energy
  • How does Solar PV work and Electricity Basics for Solar
  • Definitions and fundamentals for PV applications
  • Cost of solar, including incentives in Canada and ROI
  • System components, electrical and BoS (Balance of System)
  • Hands-on element – working as a group to install 2 PV modules with mounting and racking components on a floor-model roof, and see examples of flat-roof mounting equipment, optimizers, inverter, etc

Workshop dates and times are as follows:

  • Fri Sept 20, 1pm-5pm
  • Sat Sept 21, 10am-2pm
  • Thurs Sept 26, 1pm-5pm
  • Fri Sept 27, 10am-2pm

This crash course will be taught by a professional who has installed both residential and commercial projects across Ontario. Participants must be between the ages of 18-29.

The hands-on element will require the use of powered hand tools and lifting of loads under 50 lbs, but this is not a requirement to participate in the workshop. However, please wear close-toed shoes and dress for the weather as aspects of the workshop occur outdoors, rain or shine. Contact andrew@relayeducation.com with any inquiries.

Please note: This workshop is an educational program intended to provide general education and an overview about solar energy. This workshop is for informative purposes only and participants will not receive any certification or official training at the end.
