A U of C professor says new technology that transforms crude into small pellets could cure transportation headaches

About this Event

Ian Gates is a professor in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and prior to joining the University 15 years ago, he worked in industry. The main areas of focus of his research is in heavy oil and oil sands and improvement of the energy efficiency and environmental impact of recovery processes. He also has research interests in solidified bitumen, material science, and fluid mechanics.

In this months talk, Ian will describe the $75M University of Calgary Canada First Research Excellence Fund program briefly as well as a few examples of research arising from this program including solidified bitumen, hydrogen from heavy oil, and solutions for tailings materials.
