Songs for the Snowy Season
With three angelic voices, glorious harmonies, and a collection of homespun winter-themed original songs and holiday classics, Boreal is the perfect antidote to a cold winter’s night -- and the perfect accompaniment to a glowing fire and a mug of hot chocolate.
Former Bird Sisters, Tannis Slimmon and Jude Vadala, have been teaming up with solo artist and Betty and the Bobs vocalist, Katherine Wheatley, each winter for nearly a decade now, touring their Snowy Season side-project through community halls and concert series’ across Southern Ontario.
Together, Katherine, Jude and Tannis have compiled a collection of songs that cut through the winter cold to celebrate the warmth and togetherness of the holiday season -- and the beauty of the snow-covered landscape. Their debut album - Winter's Welcome - will be available for purchase at the show (cash only please).
Their performances this winter are not to be missed.
Meet Boreal
Tannis Slimmon
During a career that has spanned more than 30 years, Tannis Slimmon has been a core member of the legendary harmony group The Bird Sisters, and sung harmony for the Rheostatics, Barenaked Ladies and Grievous Angels, among countless others.
Tannis has earned countless awards for her songwriting and performances, including won the Porcupine Award for Favourite Album of 2001 for her album Oak Lake; the Orillia Folk Society’s Songs for Living Rooms prize for her signature song “There’s a Lift”
Her solo album Lucky Blue has garnered such honours as 2008 Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Vocalist of the Year; Top 10 Albums of 2008 in the Penguin Eggs magazine Annual Critics’ Poll; Porcupine Golden Quill Award for song-writing; and was 16th on the Galaxie Folk/Roots Channel’s Top Spins of 2008.
Jude Vadala
Like Tannis, Jude Vadala made a name for herself as a member of The Bird Sisters and has gone on to release two solo albums and work on more than fifty musical projects with artists such as Suzi Vinnick, Lynn Miles and James Gordon. Jude is also the co-founder of Guelph’s wildly popular Hillside Festival.
Katherine Wheatley
Geologist-turned-folk singer Katherine Wheatley performs more than 100 solo concerts a year, while also singing with the harmony group Betty and the Bobs, and playing guitar in Wendell Ferguson’s band. A featured vocalist on CBC Radio’s Vinyl Café, her music has also appeared in film and on TV. Through her school-wide program Youthsongs, Katherine writes and records songs with kids, and has produced 20 CDs with schools across North America. She has also been a singer/zodiac driver on board Gadventure’s ship The MS Expedition as it plies the seas of Antarctica and the Norwegian Arctic
Recognized as a well-rounded and multi-talented songstress, Katherine has received many honours, including a 2009 Porcupine Golden Quill Award for her song “Hallelujah” (which has also become a standard in sing-along circles); her 2010 solo show in Charlottetown selected as "Performance of the Year” the Guardian; two of her songs selected for the new Rise Again songbook (30th anniversary publication of Rise Up Singing); and the Toronto Star once wrote that she "turns pebbles of everyday life into dreamy mountains of song."
