WHAT IS A POETRY SLAM?
A poetry slam is a high energy competition of spoken word poetry. Poetry slams were invented by a construction worker from Chicago named Marc Smith in the 1980s as a way to bring life back into poetry readings and make the audience engaged in the show!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
There are rules to the slam!
The time limit for each performer is 3 minutes. Each 10 seconds someone goes over the time, there is a 0.5 point deduction. The times starts as soon as you engage the audience, verbally or otherwise. There are no props, costumes, or musical accompaniment allowed and all work must be original material (samples of your larger works are allowed).
Poets are permitted to read from pieces of paper or a device, memorizing the poem isn’t necessary.
Judges are selected from the audience to score the poets based on what they say and how they say it (essentially content and performance). Each poet performs their work and has it scored by the judges, the highest scoring poet wins the slam!
While most slams have 2 or 3 rounds with each round featuring the same performers, the Sony Centre Poetry Slam will be one long round with an intermission. This will allow us to give as many people as possible the opportunity to perform.
HOW DO I SIGN UP TO PERFORM?
Upon arrival, you may add your name to the performer sign-up sheet. There will be 30 spots available.
Feel free to bring two poems! If less than 30 performers sign up, we will have a lottery for those who brought two poems. You may be able to perform twice!
The winner of the slam wins two tickets to a very awesome Sony Centre event!
I DIDN'T ATTEND ANY CLASSES AND/OR I DON'T WANT TO PERFORM, MAY I STILL ATTEND?
Yes and Yes! Audience members are welcome and necessary to make this event a success. Please come out and support local poets of all experience levels.
You are still welcome to sign up to perform even if you didn't attend the Sony Centre Spoken Word Poetry Classes.
