Description

Join us on September, 26 for the 2019 Kelly Bang Lecture and Welcome Back Ceremony!

We are thrilled to have Janna MacLachlan OT Reg. (Ont.) deliver the 2019 Kelly Bang Lecture titled "The view from here: Worldviews, assumptions, and the pursuit of cultural humility in occupational therapy practice". The welcome back ceremonies for the Classes of 2020 and 2021 will include a pinning ceremony, awards and reception! Refreshments will be served. This event a great opportunity to meet with faculty and students in the School. Come celebrate with us.

Janna is an occupational therapist whose clinical career has significantly focused on generalist practice in under-resourced settings. She has worked in Nunavut periodically since 2006, and has volunteered with Amar Seva Sangam, a rehabilitation non-governmental organization in South India, since 2005. She is currently a PhD student in Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto in the Social and Behavioral Health Sciences division. Janna’s research employs critical social science approaches to addressing issues of health equity, power and privilege and settler-Indigenous reconciliation. From her position as a white woman of settler ancestry, Janna is examining in her dissertation work how rehabilitation services can provide meaningful space and respect for Indigenous knowledge. Janna was born and raised in Shelburne, NS, and returns home as often as possible to camp, sail and visit with family and friends.

There is no charge to attend lecture but we ask that you register for the event. Seats are limited, register now and don't miss out! Light refreshments will be provided.

The Kelly Bang Lectureship celebrates the memory of Kelly Bang, a nationally known occupational therapist, lecturer, writer, artist and counselor for survivors of child and sexual abuse. The memorial lecture was established by her family to honour those whose research, practice, teaching and advocacy advanced opportunities for women and other marginalized adults who are learning to live in their communities.
