About this Event

Sound Walk w/ Artists in Residence Mitchell Akiyama and Brady Peters

August 24 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

It’s an obscure truism that sound is an afterthought in the built environment. Municipal policy, generally and historically, is reactive, focusing on noise abatement. But what might a city sound, smell, feel, and look like if all sensory experience was accounted for in its planning? Sound is notoriously unwieldly, slippery, liquid. It bounces off walls and seeps through cracks. But it is these very qualities that make sound amenable to being sculpted and shaped via form and material.

As a conclusion to their residency at The Bentway, Mitchell Akiyama and Brady Peters will lead a sound walk of the site. Drawing on their experiences with the site gleaned over the course of four months of research and creation, they will guide participants on a tour that will consider how geometry and material affect our experience of urban space. Participants will encounter Akiyama and Peters’s sculptural interventions, produced over the course of their residency, and will be introduced to a ideas and techniques that will help them become more sensitive listeners and more active participants in Toronto’s urban soundscape.

The Bentway’s Artist Residency Program is presented by RBC.
