Event description

Delve into the world of sourdough through a 2-day hands-on workshop that will teach you how to make naturally leavened sourdough bread -- right from mixing on day 1 to baking on day 2. Learn about West Avenue at Somerset Orchards, our chosen location for the workshop, and take a stroll through the trees that produce the fruit for the cider we will be tasting.

Day 1 will be our busiest day. We will start working on our sourdough bread -- beginning with the basic necessities: flour, water, and salt. We will learn about and discuss the process of making sourdough at home and just how this sourdough starter works. We will talk about other baked goods a starter could be used in and get started on our sourdough pie dough for our apple pies. As we near the end of Day 1, we will break for a light lunch and a cider tasting before shaping up our loaves and cleaning up.

Day 2 will be more relaxed while we bake our loaves from the previous day and take a small tour of the orchard. We will finish up our apple pies for you to take home and bake, filling your house with the aroma of apples, cinnamon and sourdough! Each student will feed some sourdough starter to take home with them and continue on their sourdough baking journey. We will finish up the day with tasting our freshly baked breads and discussing the various flavour profiles of a properly baked loaf of bread. A light lunch and a cider tasting are including in Day 2 as well. At the end of our weekend workshop, each student will go home with a recipe booklet, sourdough starter and instructions to keep it alive + well, their sourdough apple pie, and 2 loaves of freshly baked sourdough bread.

Extra Info:
The majority of our workshop will be spent in the outdoors (with cover to protect from the sun/rain). Please dress appropriately according to the weather.

Please keep in mind that we will be on our feet all day and comfortable footwear is advised.

Feel free (it is recommended) to bring a water bottle with you. Coffee will be provided in the morning and water will be available.

Day 1 will run from 10am until approximately 3pm. Day 2 will be shorter and earlier. We will start at 8am and finish up at around noon. The length of time for each day is dependent on the curiosity and discussions each group of bakers brings to the workshop.
