Event description

Description

Speak Up for Ability is a forum for up to 100 parents, teachers and community services providers who work together to ensure the best learning opportunities for students with learning disabilities and attention issues. It is expected that at the end of this forum, participants will be able to better collaborate in finding the best solutions in overcoming challenges for students with learning disabilities, will be more competent in advocating the rights of students with disabilities, navigating the educational system and communicating with each other and have better understanding of roles and responsibilities of teachers, administrators, parents and service providers.

The keynote speaker, Jennifer-Amy Murphy, LDSB Special Education Coordinator, will talk about Universal Design for Learning. In the advocacy panel we invited Angus Row (student), Tracey Row (parent), Jessi Lalonde (assistive technology resource teacher) and Gail Eaton-Smith (Queen's University Counselling Services) to talk about their experiences of navigating the education system for learners with disabilities and the best strategies to help students with learning disabilities and attention issues succeed. There will aslo be two consecutive workshops facilitated by Jessi Lalonde on Individual Education Plan (IEP)/ Identifcation, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) and Carolyn Wiens on Effective Learning and Behaviour Strategies as a Lifelong Process.

There will be a small community fair with local organizations and service providers sharing information on services and programs. Free parking and a light lunch will be provided.

The forum is organized in collaboration with United Parents of Bayridge and with funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education PRO Grant program.
