Description

Leah Denbok's Presentation on Humanizing the Homeless

Leah will present her photographs and stories of people experiencing homelessness. Across these images Leah hopes to humanize the homelessness and shine a spotlight on their problems.

Leah is an 19-year-old photographer from Collingwood, ON. Since the age of 13, she has been mentored by Joel Sartore, a National Geographic photographer and Fellow. One of Leah’s idols is Lee Jeffries the British photographer who shot portraits of homeless people in London, so her father, Tim, suggested she do a similar series in Toronto. For the past few years, Leah and her dad have taken photos of homeless people in Toronto, Hamilton and other cities in North America, capturing stunning, humanizing portraits of people living on the street. They also interview the subjects, asking about their back stories and their hopes for the future.

Leah has published two books entitled Nowhere to Call Home—Photographs and Stories of People Experiencing Homelessness, Volume One and Two. Among media outlets that have interviewed Leah are: the BBC, CBC, CTV, The Toronto Star, Global News, City TV, the Corriere della Sera (the main daily paper in Italy), Toronto Life, and Chatelaine.

Leah is in her second year of a Bachelor of Photography program at Sheridan College in Oakville.
