Description

Mental Health and Leadership- Shea Emry

Pillar: Self

Learning Outcomes:

1) Is imperfection normal? — Perfection is unattainable — Embracing the struggles each and every day with positivity is what allows you and your self-conscious to take everything a little lighter. Chill. Work your ass off to learn and grow, but chill.

2) Do you even lift? — Mental Health starts with Movement — What empowers you? What gives you the most confidence? Where do you feel most alive? By tapping into that mindset each and every day when 'it hits the fan' you're be able to endure more, and a vessel for expression and ventilation more readily at your finger tips.

3) Don't try and be someone else — People respect and are attracted to truth + authenticity. They want to connect with it. Just be you. If you don't know who that is well then that's a good place to start.

Personal Bio:

All-Star Middle Linebacker, Shea Emry, was one of the fiercest and nastiest players in the Canadian Football League and has transitioned to tackling on a new field: men’s health and development. He’s become an advocate for Watson Centre for Brain Health, the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation, UBC Men’s Health Network, and Bell Let’s Talk.

Sidelined with a concussion in 2011, Emry battled a lifetime of negative self-image that had previously prevented him from taking risks and stepping outside his comfort zone. He began to share his story with the goal of inspiring others and has since turned that into his first entrepreneurial endeavour.

Shea founded Wellmen, an action based men’s adventure club that proves being a ‘real man’ is about being a balanced man; no tear, grunt, or hard work left out. Wellmen rewilds men by teaching them modern day survival skills throughout their endorphin inducing excursions in nature. Wellmen brings that stoke.

He’s since launched another project called Axewood, a fully mobile interactive axe throwing experience; dive deep into your primal brain by picking up an axe and hucking it at a target. Axewood can be anywhere at anytime. They have a fully enclosed batting cage like throwing range which can be host corporate events, festivals, and even recreational beer leagues. It’s a great way to take an apprehensive person from no I can’t, to OMG, what the huck, I just did that! in a few short minutes. You can find out more at axewoodcrew.com.

Shea’s purpose is to challenge hyper-masculine stereotypes wielding an axe and in tree pose, meanwhile cultivating confidence and power. It would only be fitting that he is now a father to his 3 year son Rozen Oak and 1 year old daughter Clooney Bloom.

Talk Outline: An Adventure Within: How to become more HuManly.

DESCRIPTION:

Our society of men are conscripted to abide by a set of guidelines that make us unequivocally 'masculine'; These habits have led to an entrenched culture of emotional silence amongst men — this silence has reached toxic proportions. Being one of the many that was seemingly forced to wear armoury that deflected any vulnerable human connection — Shea explains how emotive silence brings us further away from being human. We are a society who need to vent our emotions and not suppress our human nature and connect in a way that is powerful for the individual as well as the people around us.
