Presentation Title: Special Considerations for Heavy Haul Road Bridge Design

Does a heavy haul road bridge design have any differences from a highway bridge other than it carries heavier trucks? From a bridge design perspective, it is designed primarily in accordance with the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC), but not entirely. What does that mean? This presentation will unfold the mysteries and answer some of the questions.

Speakers:

Qingsong Liu, P.Eng., WSP

Qingsong Liu is a Senior Structural Engineer and Project Manager in the Calgary office of WSP Canada. He has more than 30 years of experience in bridge engineering in Canada, England, Middle Eastern nations and China. He designed many type of bridge structures for applications of pedestrian, highway, LRT, railway, and heavy haul road.

Qingsong was appointed as the member of the technical committee and board of editors for the development of the new Railway Bridge and Culverts Design Code in China

Qingsong was the structural lead for the design of first heavy haul road bridge in Alberta Oilsand that carries CAT 797F mining trucks, which was built in 2010. Currently, he is the structural lead for another heavy haul road bridge in Alberta Oilsand, and he contributed to the technical development of the main bridge design parameters for heavy haul road applications.

Michael Hatch, P.Eng., WSP

Michael Hatch is a Senior Project Manager and Senior Structural Engineer with WSP Canada. He has extensive experience in rehabilitation assessment and preliminary and detailed design of bridge structures in grade separations, river crossings and other transportation applications on major bridge-related projects in Canada, the United Kingdom, Trinidad and Tobago, and China. He also has extensive experience working with public and private sector clients on a multitude of successful projects in a variety of geographical and operational contexts. Michael is currently working on several high profile projects across Canada, including the New Champlain Bridge Corridor Project in Montreal, the Highway 427 Expansion Project in Toronto, the Nicholas Street over Hwy 417 Bridge Replacement in Ottawa, and the Blue Line Preliminary design in Calgary.

Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition

In this annual competition students in Civil Engineering programs from the University of Calgary and SAIT will design and build bridges using only 100 popsicle sticks and white glue based on a set of given specifications. The bridges are tested under loading conditions and the best bridges will be announced. It is a great opportunity for civil engineering students to challenge their knowledge and practical abilities in structural engineering.

* Corporate entries are welcome! Send us an email for more information on the rules if you are interested to attend.

CSCE Calgary section annual general meeting will also take place at the end. All CSCE members are encouraged to stay.
