Event Details

The Program

Winsport and Speed Skating Canada have partnered on the Speed Skating Performance Development Program.  The program is a talent identification effort designed to recruit Calgary and surrounding area-based athletes, specifically 14 to 18 years old, to the sport of long track speed skating.  The goal is to provide young talented individuals with a Long Term Athlete Development Model which takes the young athletes on a journey through the elite athlete pathway to the Olympics or Active for Life!

Selections for the Performance Development Program involve three stages.  Stage 1 selections are a 1-day evaluation of on-ice skating skills and four physical ability tests.  This ID camp is being run on October  28th.  Athletes selected from the ID camp then begin Stage 2, a month long training program introducing speed skating-specific training and skills.  The selection process ends with Stage 3, a day of Long Track racing.  The month long training program, with speed skates being provided, will prepare the athletes for the speed skating races, which are held on November 25th.

Final selections make up the Performance Development Training Group, and the 2012/2013 yearly training program begins.

Location

The program's Stage 1 Talent ID camps are held at the Calgary Olympic Oval, on October 28th, 2012.

Depending on the number of registrants, athletes will be split into two groups.  Group 1 will start at 9:00am and finish their final field test at ~2pm.  Group 2 will start at 12:15pm and finish at ~5:15pm.

**A more detailed schedule of the ability tests, along with your Group start time, will be sent via email, closer to the testing dates.
