Description

Please join the Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) and the Stewards of Cootes Watershed for an opportunity to experience the incredible phenomenon of Chinook Salmon making their spawning run in the waters of Lower Spencer Creek. (CLICK ON THE REGISTRATION LINK ABOVE).

There will be walks hosted by HCA staff, creekside chat from Stewards of Cootes Watershed ED Alan Hansell, as well as several local environmental agency booths onsite to talk with the public. Please register early as space is limited! Once you have registered, event location and details will be emailed to you. The HCA led walks are sold out, but see below for a description of the creekside chat:

"Atlantic Salmon have long disappeared from Spencer Creek but we now find their West Coast cousins, the Chinook Salmon, making a spawning run at this time of year in their place. Come hear about how this switch all happened. Learn about their epic journey from the depths of Lake Ontario against the current and back to the exact spot that they themselves were spawned four years earlier. Learn how their bodies actually physiologically change and how these fish spend their very last life force to ensure the continuation of their species. Every detail reaffirms just how amazing Nature is. Sadly, there is a dark story to share of how poachers seek to thwart this local wonder of Nature. Join local Ecologist Tys Theysmeyer and Stewards of Cootes Watershed Executive Director Alan Hansell for this amazing and hopeful presentation."

Please dress for the weather. Questions about the event can be directed to Jeff Stock at jstock@conservationhamilton.ca or (905) 525-2181 ext.196.

Looking forward to having you along!
