Adding Spirit to the Mix
Whether in a family or in the workplace, when we care about a person who is struggling with an addiction, we can often inadvertently find ourselves participating in “enabling” behaviours – which does nothing more than prolong the addiction.
Rather than becoming “addicted to the addict’s addiction,” the most loving thing we can do for people who are hurting themselves with addictive behaviours is to learn the difference between helping and enabling. By doing this, we can begin to set and maintain appropriate, self-respecting boundaries that will actually help the addicted person get off the roller-coaster of active addiction and live his or her best life.
Candace will invite questions and discussion in relation to the following:
(a) What is the difference between helping and enabling when dealing with an addicted person in the workplace?
(b) How can we learn to take the best possible care of ourselves, while also caring about a family member, friend, or colleague who is struggling with addiction.
