This presentation will begin by providing a brief overview of the compassion model and the importance of compassion within the healthcare literature. An update of recent research activities over the past year on the topics of self-compassion, compassion fatigue and healthcare providers perspectives and understandings of compassion will then be presened. Finally, in terms of future directions, an overview of the COMPASS study: The Development of a Patient Reported Measure of Compassion will be provided.

Presented by Dr. Shane Sinclair

Dr. Shane Sinclair is an Assistant Professor and Cancer Care Research Professor with the University of Calgary, Faculty of Nursing. He holds adjunct appointments at the Cumming School of Medicine (University of Calgary) and the Manitoba Palliative Care Research Unit (University of Manitoba).

His clinical practice and research focuses on psychosocial and spiritual issues within oncology and palliative care, including his nationally funded program of research on compassion where he is currently the Nominated Principal Applicant for a multicenter CIHR funded study to develop a Patient Reported Compassionate Care Measure.

Dr. Sinclair is a former Canadian Institutes of Health Research Postdoctoral Fellow (University of Manitoba), a recipient of the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care Award of Excellence in Research, a top 40 under 40 awardee, the current President of the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology and the 2016 awardee of the International Psychosocial Oncology Society New Investigator Award.
