Skills for Change & Hot Docs present: Reels for Change: an discussion series with filmmakers on current issues with our CEO, Surranna Sandy
About this event
Skills for Change’s Spotlight Series is hosted by our CEO, Surranna Sandy and is focused on taking an in-depth look at the relevant issues of today and seeing how to address the gaps as well as coming together to provide collective solutions as a community. Past sessions have featured discussions on COVID-19’s impact on women and immigration and Anti-Black Racism - with expert guest speakers and thought leaders.
Reels for Change is a joint effort where filmmakers and guest speakers focus on social and cultural issues throughout a series of films presented in collaboration with Hot Docs' Citizen Minutes project.
Our first session will focus on the short Mending a Crack in the Sky, a short about Shamso Mohamoud and Shamso Elmi who lost their sons to violence and watched their alleged killers walk free without legal prosecution. We'll be joined by the filmmakers Zach Jama & Rob Issa as well as Shamso Mohamoud and Shamso Elmi for a discussion lead by Ruth Mengistu, Program Manager for Skills for Change's Black Community Access & Programming.
