Description

About the retreat

Immerse yourself in meditations that will purify your heart on this guided retreat weekend in the mountains. During this weekend, you will discover meditations on love and compassion that will transform your heart and mind and create the causes for lasting peace and happiness. The retreat will be held at the Canmore Clubhouse, Alpine Club of Canada in Canmore, AB. This retreat is a joint retreat with our sister centre in Edmonton, Amitabha Kadampa Buddhist Centre.

About the teachers

Gen Kelsang Dema is the Resident Teacher of Akshobya Kadampa Buddhist Centre in Calgary. Her example of faith and commitment have helped many people integrate Buddha’s wisdom and compassion into their lives.

Kadam Kelly Loeffelman is the Resident Teacher of Amitabha Kadampa Buddhist Centre in Edmonton. She presents Buddha’s teachings in a practical and accessible way for everyone to apply in their daily life.

We are fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy this Modern Buddhist retreat with such experienced practitioners in Alberta.

General Information

The Retreat will be held at the Alpine Club of Canada in Canmore. Weʼre staying in the Canmore Clubhouse, a mountain lodge with shared bedrooms and baths. Bedding and towels are provided. (The venue is not wheelchair accessible and features stairs between several of the areas we will use.)

Itʼs a good idea to have good shoes and layered clothing for exercise and fresh air between meditation sessions.

We will bring our meditation cushions from the Centres, but if you have your own please, bring it. We have a bright, comfortable meeting room for our meditations, as well as a comfortable living room with great views to enjoy.

Vegetarian meals will be prepared in advance by volunteers and served in our own kitchen. Please let us know your special dietary needs when registering and we will let you know the extent to which they can be accommodated. If you would like to join the volunteer meal team, please let us know in advance.

When engaging in retreat, it is beneficial for practitioners to place offerings on the shrine to Buddha and the Spiritual Guide. These need to be nonperishable and individually wrapped items such as tea bags, non-alcoholic drinks, candies, and so on, as they remain on the shrine until the end of the retreat.

On Saturday evening, we will have a session dedicated to making special requests and offerings to the Spiritual Guide followed by an offering feast. It is customary for each person to bring a pure food offering for this session. Finger food works best, such as fresh fruit, veggies, dip, cheese, cookies, crackers, chocolates--anything edible, really, except for meat and alcohol. Everyone enjoys this offering feast at the end of the ceremony.

There will be silent times from the last session until lunch the next day.

Carpooling can be arranged. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email us.

Smoking and use of intoxicants of any kind or anywhere on the retreat centre grounds are not allowed during the retreat.

We regret that due to our contract with the retreat facility, we cannot reduce rates for attending only a part of the retreat. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Cancellation Policy

Refunds in the event of cancellation will be handled by the Centre rather than through Eventbrite. If you cancel your retreat registration on or before March 13, we will refund your event fee less a non-refundable 25% deposit. We regret that we cannot give refunds for cancellations after March 13. Please contact the Administrative Director at AkshobyaAdmin@gmail.com to arrange the refund.

Exceptions can be made in cases of unexpected serious illness or bereavement. Please contact the Administrative Director: AkshobyaAdmin@gmail.com.
