Event Details

We Are Moving!

Gentle Zen Form - Yoga & Meditation Practice Community will be in a new home beginning this September.   A new location, home for cushions, creative format, ENSO offering and teaching collective.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Tandava Studio for providing a home this past year.  So very kind and amazing.

In The Meantime

Our weekly practice will move into the great outdoors for a weekly hike and sit together.

Each week we will walk the trails in convivial conversation, a bit of time for silent hiking, then sitting in stillness taking in the landscape with all of our senses.  A simple practice guided by Melissa & Danielle, but mostly led by nature.

50 minute hike - Little stretch - 20 minute sit (upright and/or supine/lying down) - reflective reading - 40 minute return to base.

*If you are not able to join us for hiking, we look forward to seeing you more formally on the cushion this fall.

What to Bring

Water, layers for heat and cool, something to sit on.  Hike will be canceled during rain.

Where to Meet

Please arrive early to meet beside the parking lot.  The group will leave at 6:45 p.m. sharp.

If you are coming off of Springfield Rd. or Harvey, you drive south up Benvoulin Road of and continue up the mountain staying left after the bridge over Mission Creek. At the top, there is a four-way stop drive, head straight through on to Stewart Road East and follow this to the end where there is a park entrance.
Payment is Dana There is no set fee for any of the 8 Hike & Sit evenings. You can join one or join them all - then make a donation through registration accordingly.  We welcome you to practice Dana in any form.  Dana is the practice of generosity and giving freely.  It is not paying for goods or services rendered; it is given from the heart.  Dana funds go directly to ENSO Society Teachers, supporting personal education and the giving of this service freely.

What About Yoga?

Melissa will be subbing classes at Moksha Yoga.  If she's not teaching, she's hanging out in the vinyasa flow classes or practicing on her kitchen floor. There's pretty much yoga everywhere in town.   Yes! Even on your kitchen floor!

Melissa looks forward to teaching a regular yoga class this fall.

Danielle is subbing classes at Global Fitness.

Who Are These Practices For?

ENSO Movement, Yoga, Hiking, Breathing & Stillness (meditation) practices are for people interested in reducing stress, slowing down, exploring new ways of inhabiting a body, contemplative inquiry, working with reactivity, resilience, gratitude, and compassion.  These practices are great for people who are sometimes just not that interested in enlightenment or personal transcendence.  Here you will find regular people interested in intimate connections with nature, friends, family members, social engagement and community health.

These practices are great for healthcare practitioners, writers, teachers, artists, musicians, lawyers, professional trades, moms, dads, those in recovery from addiction, and pretty much everyone seeking supportive health renewal in practical, accessible ways.  Practices that create take-home tools.

Community Statement

We aim to create programs, to the best of our ability, where all individuals feel welcome, seen and heard. We are a community that strives to be open and inclusive of all socio-economic capacities, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, mental and physical differences, religious faiths, beliefs, and positions.

Melissa Berry Appleton

Executive Director, Buddhist Practitioner, Meditation & Yoga Teacher

Melissa has been a student of yoga for 18 years and has received extensive yoga and meditation training. She keeps study and practice company with Norman Fischer and is currently enrolled in the Buddhist Chaplaincy Training Program at Upaya Zen Centre. Melissa holds a Bachelor of Music Therapy and a post-graduate diploma in Human Resources. Her experience spans work within geriatric cognitive impairments, palliative care, addiction counseling, and raising three children. Melissa has a family, a lover (her husband), a black lab, hikes, makes pottery, and is a bit of a rebel. She deeply loves the Bodhisattva vows, is humbled by the precepts, continues to work with her sometimes anxious breathing, is making friends with her mind and better relationships with all of life.

Danielle Prins

Program Coordinator, Buddhist Practitioner, Yoga Teacher

Danielle is a certified Kripalu yoga teacher and kinesiology graduate from UBC. She worked for Big Brothers Big Sisters leading mindfulness programs in schools where children face some of our community’s greatest barriers. Danielle is also a member of the ENSO Teen Expedition Team. She is ever present, kind, and receptive in a way that teens can truly relate to. She never stops smiling and knows when to bring the silliness out! Danielle attends silent retreat regularly and will be attending a four-month residency program under the direction of Joan Halifax at Upaya Zen Centre at the beginning of 2017. At a very young age, Danielle is leading her generation through the teaching of ‘doing less and being more’.
