Songwriting
Songwriting is an art of combining words with musicality. The structure is created by the intention of the songwriter, influences, genre, culture and instrumentation; the craft comes down to two things that are essential… melody and lyrics.
The Workshop on Zoom
In this workshop each of the participants (maximum 5) will be actively interacting during each session by demonstrating or talking about where they are in their process. All participants are encouraged to offer feedback to others. Everyone must have audio and preferably video enabled so we can communicate with one another. Our goal is to help each other complete projects by the end of the 3 weeks.
• We will start with a songwriting skills discussion.
• Each individual will present where they are in their songwriting process
• All participants are encouraged to offer feedback
• Goal setting! Everyone set a goal for next week.
Week 1 | Songwriting Basics & Techniques
What are the parts of a song? What are different approaches to songwriting? What instruments do you use for tuning and timing support? What is the difference between poetry and songwriting? What are the differences between genres? What are the types of songs you can write? How do you start? What makes a good song? The importance of timing.
Week 2 | Lets Sing About It
We will start with a review and people’s take always from the last workshop. What helped you? What is easy, what is hard? Each will present where they are in the process and offer feedback to others to help encourage the direction towards completion. You may take time to try different approaches to a line, sing it a few ways, and try things for the group.
Week 3 | Arrangement, Recording and Sharing
What does it mean to arrange a song? Beyond verses, chorus, bridge there can be a variety of ways to arrange a song for a group of musicians. If you want to record the songs we will look at options of how to do that. Those who have the technology can play the files they have created. Lets look at how to register your song with SOCAN, get distribution on Spotify, Apple and more.
