Description

SSHRC Workshop Series: Student and HQP Training

Presentation (30 min)

  • Review of SSHRC IDG guidelines for Roles and Training of Students section/how to integrate student training plan into Methodology section
  • Review of SSHRC’s Dimensions of Effective Research Training
  • How SSHRC evaluates this section
  • Provide specific examples pulled from the repository

Breakout Sessions (60 min)

  • Potential worksheet with questions aimed at getting researchers to think critically about the training opportunities of their proposed project:
  • What are my general student training objectives? What skills/experiences/knowledge/opportunities do I want the students to walk away with?
  • Which of my projects or project objectives would be appropriate for a student to take on or be involved with? At what level would this student need to be? (Undergraduate, Master’s, PhD, PDF)
  • Do I already have students in mind for this project?
  • What valuable skills will my students gain from their involvement? (Provide checkboxes here with the skills pulled from Dimensions of Effective Research Training (ie research methods and theories, knowledge mobilization, digital literacy, interdisciplinary research, leadership and teamwork, etc.), with space to describe specifically how the student will gain these skills)
  • How specifically will I mentor these students?
  • Are there any other alternative or nonconventional ways that students will be provided with research training? (Provide checkboxes for things like research/teaching assistantships, career development workshops, online training modules, external partner internships, etc.)

Optional Stay-Behind/Questions (60 min)
