Event Details

Workshop runs 8 weeks: Thursdays 7-9pm Oct. 19 to Dec. 7 & Sat. Dec. 9

* SOLD OUT! Contact us to get on the waiting list *

Always wanted to try doing stand up comedy - but are terrified of bombing? Or don't know how to get started? This fun and challenging workshop is where to begin. Conquer the fear and discover the addictive thrill of making  people laugh really hard.

Your instructor Kirsten Van Ritzen is a seasoned professional and an encouraging teacher. She will motivate you to write and perform original stand-up comedy. Discuss comedy topics, learn insider tips, and develop the kind of quality material it takes most amateurs a year or more to develop only doing Open Mics.

Kirsten has taught hundreds of people from all walks of life. Many have gone on to host their own standup shows, win comedy competitions, and appear on television. The workshop has been described as “inspiring”, “life changing” and “a weekly date with laughter.” Discover your true voice, while you have a really good time laughing with other funny people.

The session includes a 'field trip' to a local comedy show, and the opportunity to perform in the 7th annual Ho HO HO Show (Sat. Dec. 9 ~ to be confirmed)!

No previous experience is required -  allow for 30-60 minutes creative writing time outside of class. .

Please register in advance with Kirsten/Broad Theatrics (not thru James Bay New Horizons).  Payment in full guarantees your spot - class size is limited.  19 + Adult content/humour.

Fee $175 + GST (note that Eventbrite adds a service fee)

What if I prefer not to pay with credit card?

No problem! Other payment options:

1) mail a cheque $183.75  (plz email for details)

2)  e transfer

3) cash by arrangement

4) Deposit option: $40 with balance due on first class

What is the refund policy?

Fee is fully refundable up to 7 days before the first class. Once the session begins there are NO refunds for missed classes or for dropping out, because that means it is too late for someone on the waiting list to take your spot.

* However if you do have to drop out mid-session for whatever reason, you are welcome to take a future workshop of standup or improv for NO ADDITIONAL charge. *

I have to miss a class due to my kids/travel/theflu/dentist appointment, etc.

We understand. If you miss a class, Kirsten will send you an email about what you missed and what the next's week assignment is. If you don't have time to do your your homework, that's okay too. Just showing up is good.

Wait - what is this about homework?

You will get weekly comedy writing assignments – don’t worry, there won’t be grades and nobody cares about spelling.  Try to set aside 30-60 minutes per week outside of class to create comedy.

What if I am not funny?

Yeah you are. Sign up.

Can I contact the instructor with questions?

Yes. Email Kirsten at  or call 778.440.0408
