The first seminar in a 3 part series on mental health and performance

About this Event

A Foot Above Fitness will be hosting a seminar series on mental health and performance.

All proceeds going to the Canadian Center for Mental Health and Sport (CCMHS.)

The seminar will be given by two huge names in the industry, Dr. Natalie Durand-Bush and her colleague Krista Van Slingerland from the Canadian Center for Mental Health and Sport (CCMHS.) The goal of this seminar series will be to teach the difference between mental health and mental performance, as well as help build a toolbox of techniques to begin working on these topics for yourself.

If you have any questions about this seminar, please feel free to reach out to Zach – FootAbove@gmail.com

A little more on our presenters:

Dr. Natalie Durand-Bush is a full professor and director of the SEWP Lab in the School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada. She is also an adjunct professor in the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in Oslo, Norway. Her areas of interest and expertise include psychological skills training, coaching, and mental health and well-being. Through her research and practice, she aims to understand self-regulation competencies underlying the development of optimal performance and well-being in different contexts including sport, medicine, the performing arts, and academia. Natalie also develops interventions and programs designed to help individuals and teams achieve performance excellence and sustain self-care and mental health in this process. Her work as a Mental Performance Consultant with high performance and developmental level athletes and coaches for the past 24 years is intricately linked to her research and teaching.

Krista Van Slingerland is a PhD candidate in the SEWP Lab in the School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa. Her research focuses on mental health and mental illness in competitive and high-performance athletes. Krista became interested in this area of study following her own struggles with mental illness as a university athlete, which illuminated harsh realities about the sport system and culture that can deter help-seeking and diminish the importance of mental health. Krista co-founded the Student-Athlete Mental Health Initiative (SAMHI) in 2013, a charity devoted to promoting and protecting the mental health of Canada’s university athletes. A conference All-Star for the uOttawa Gee-Gees, Krista received the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Tracy MacLeod Award for her determination and unwavering spirit. Now retired from competitive sport, Krista is enjoying giving back to the sporting community through coaching, advocacy work, and research. As an integral member of the SEWP Lab, Krista is working with Dr. Natalie Durand-Bush to design, implement, and evaluate a Canadian Centre for Mental Health and Sport (CCMHS) that will feature specialized, interdisciplinary mental health services for competitive and high-performance athletes and coaches.
