Event description

Description

StepWise is an evidence-based technique for interviewing child victims and witnesses. This series of intensive workshops on the StepWise approach to interviewing will focus on learning specialized skills for effective practice. The training includes a 2.5 day workshop, “The Basics”, a half day “Question and Answer Session”, as well as a full day “Update and Practice” workshop.

Participants may register for all or a combination of workshop options based on individual training needs. Please see below for the workshop descriptions, intended audience, and schedule.

The StepWise Approach to Interviewing: The Basics - 2.5 day

Tuesday, March 20 - Thursday, March 22, 2018

This workshop will benefit anyone who has not participated in StepWise training with the Forensic Alliance / Practice, The Justice Institute, or the RCMP since 2009.

The workshop will teach you the specialized knowledge and skills required for conducting sensitive child and adolescent interviews in order to elicit reliable memory evidence. You will learn about the myths and barriers that prevent effective interviewing with this population and the ways to overcome them.

Two full day sessions (Tuesday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 21) from 9:00 am - 4:45 pm and final half day (Thursday, March 22) from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm. Registration is at 8:45 am on the first day. Lunch and refreshments provided.

StepWise Question and Answer Session - 0.5 day (afternoon)

Thursday, March 22, 2018 - Afternoon

This half-day session (afternoon of Thursday, March 22) can be attended by anyone with previous StepWise training including participants in the 2.5 day workshop “The StepWise Approach to Interviewing: The Basics” and participants in the "Update and Practice" workshop.

The "Question and Answer Session" content will be driven by audience questions and needs. This can be in relation to tailoring it to different cultures, ages, or children with special needs, to interviewing witnesses in complex cases (e.g., involving prolonged and multi-faceted abuse), etc. The trainer may also address more advanced topics that were raised and placed in the ‘parking lot’ but not addressed during the 2.5-day workshop.

Thursday afternoon session runs from 1:15 - 4:45 pm. Participants are welcome to come for lunch at 12:30.

StepWise Update and Practice Workshop - 1 day

Friday, March 23, 2018

In this full-day session (Friday, March 23) participants will have the opportunity to participate in additional practical exercises, including recorded practice interviews with peer and/or instructor feedback. Everyone who has prior StepWise training would benefit (including those who attend the 2.5-day “The Basics” session).

Friday full day session runs from 9:00 am - 4:45 pm. Registration is at 8:45 am. Lunch and refreshments provided.
