STEVE EDWIN ANDERSON:
Steve Edwin Anderson is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter. Originally from West Texas (Lubbock), he has been writing and performing his own songs since the mid-1960s for personal pleasure, family and friends. Steve moved to Canada in 1981. After retiring from his job as professor at the University of Toronto in 2018, he began devoting more time to his lifelong musical interests, including the bucket-list dream of recording some of his own compositions with professional musicians. Steve asked family friend and Toronto musician James McKie if he would take the lead in producing his music. This led to an album of ten favorites originally composed between 1968 and 2021. The album would not have happened without the encouragement, musical talents and production skills of James McKie and Tim Bovaconti, and other Toronto musicians recruited for specific tracks. The album was recorded at Tim’s Garage studio between January and March 2022. Since James and Tim each played multiple instruments on the studio album tracks, James recruited three other talented Toronto musicians to collaborate as the “A-Side Band” in tonight’s live performance of the album, including Ken Yoshioka (who can be heard playing harmónica on two tracks of the original album), Terry Wilkins (on bass), and Andrew McCarthy (on drums). The selection of songs samples the diversity of Steve’s song catalogue—songs that are variously whimsical, wistful and existential. An independent reviewer from Pitch Perfect, a Chicago-based organization dedicated to authentic reviews of indie music, had this to say “For those who lean country or Americana in our audience, this one is not to be missed by a writer and player with decades of music he’s now ready to share.” (Dino DiMuro, Pitch Perfect, 8/03/22)
KEN YOSHIOKA:
Ken Yoshioka will open tonight’s show in addition to playing in the A-Side Band. Ken is a Toronto based blues musician originally from Kamakura, Japan. He started his career as a harmonica player and developed into a singer, guitar player and songwriter. Ken’s harmonica playing is dynamic and lyrical. His impressive finger picking guitar style is influenced by such masters as: Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker etc. He sings with soul and writes with passion.
