Event description

Description

Join storytellers Sarah Abu-Sharar and Sage Tyrtle for two stories you have never heard before.

First, Sage Tyrtle tells "Snow Queen in North Korea" - weaving together the folktale Snow Queen with real history from 1970s North Korea. The eerie parallels in the two stories are highlighted, while giving the audience a chance to understand the naive hopefulness of both the Robber Girl (Snow Queen) and Kim Jong-Il (North Korea). Directed by Ashley Comeau.

Sage Tyrtle teaches storytelling, and tells stories on stages all over Canada. Her stories have been featured on NPR and CBC radio.

Then, acclaimed storyteller Sarah Abu-Sharar tells "A Day Like Any Other" - the story of an honour killing of a 16 year old girl, that took place in the Hebron Hills more than 160 years ago. The story focuses on the strong stance one man took for the girl after her death and the generosity of Bedouins who took him in. The story takes place in Palestine and Jordan. This is a family story shaped and told by Sarah Abu-Sharar.

Sarah Abu-Sharar comes from a long line of storytellers on her father's side. She tells stories to both adults and children often at cultural centers, festivals, museums, libraries, parks and homes. Because Sarah grew up in several countries, she tells stories from all over the world with the focus on Palestinian and Croatian stories, where her roots lie. Her favorite stories are ones that promote social change. Sarah has also used stories in a therapeutic way, with children in refugee camps as well as refugee children in Toronto. She teaches stories at the Parent Child Mother Goose Program. Sarah loves to listen to stories and get lost in the magic of the tales.
