  • Three choices left offering specialized training in the art of storytelling

  • Wednesday July 4 2018 9:45am to 4pm

  • Trent University, Gzowski College, Peterborough, Ontario

This is a unique opportunity to meet with storytellers and story listeners from across Canada interested in profesional training or curious how to apply storytelling in family, community or workplace settings.

$150 covers the cost of the session, parking, morning and afternoon refreshments and lunch.

*Masterclasses invite experienced participants to bring their own work as part of their learning experience.
**Workshops invite participants of all levels of interest for demonstration and discussion during the session.


Masterclass with CHRIS BROOKES: SOLD OUT! Radio Documentary-Makers: "Making Rain"

Participants will explore ways of storytelling and dramaturgy, working with the interviewees, structure, editing, mixing, and narration. You will listen to excerpts from documentary features and have hands-on practice. [Read more] Bring a good quality audio recorder with onboard or separate microphone and headphones.

Chris is an author, storyteller and independent audio producer known internationally for his audio documentaries including contributions to CBC radio.

Participants will explore storytelling with very young children, inclusive of varied languages and cultures. By covering material from oral traditions from around the world, they will learn ways to engage rich veins of story with playful rhymes, chants, refrains and tales, exploring language relations and storytelling. Mariella, a former Children's Librarian and Ruth, Program Director of the Parent-Child Mother Goose Program along with ECE teacher Maria Ordonez, are professional storytellers.

Masterclass with MICHELLE TOCHER: 2 TICKETS LEFT! Thresholds in Life and Fairy Tales

Participants will explore the “departure” and “return” thresholds in fairy tales and folktales. Using drama, writing and storytelling, they will 'map' their own selection of a fairy tale or folktale; find the protagonists at two pivotal moments; and make real life connections. [Read more] Bring a fairy tale or folktale of up to 5 pages to work with.

Michelle is a master storyteller and author of six books and an online self-study program, wonderlit.com. She has worked in a variety of therapeutic environments with adults who have a wide range of abilities.

Workshop with ALICE OLSEN WILLIAMS: The Spirit of Truth and Reconciliation Support Group Quilt

Participants will discuss the process to support sometimes difficult stories shared in circle that can also be expressed through a textile art form such as quilting. The special quilt created by an Indigenous and non Indigenous local group will be on display for study from the Kawartha Spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Support Group (KTRSG). [Read more]

Alice is an Indigenous textile artist and master quilter living in Curve Lake First Nation. She will present her story of Anishinaabe life and influence in her growth as an Anishinaabe woman in the dominating, patriarchal, capitalist culture.
