Strathcona Dye Plants: Walk No.3
Event Information
Description
Join artists Jennifer Brant and Anna Heywood-Jones for a series of natural dye plant walks through the Strathcona neighbourhood, which is part of the unceded territories of the xwmkwy"m (Musqueam), Skwxw7mesh (Squamish) and sl"lwta"/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. Beginning at the Strathcona Community Centre, each walk will focus on a specific plant, exploring its physical, ecological and social implications alongside its extracted colour. Through a combination of demonstration and hands-on experimentation, participants will have the chance to work with the dye and take home textile samples. The walks are open to people of all ages, though we require those under the age of 12 to be accompanied by an adult. Participation is limited to 12 people.
The third and final walk in this series is on July 20nd and we will decide what plant or plants to focus on based on what is the most plentiful and ready for use.
These walks are part of a larger mapping project undertaken by the EartHand Gleaners Society that seeks to consider the neighborhood from the perspective of plants, textiles, decolonization and resilience.
