Event description

Description

Evidence indicates that African and black immigrant children and youth experience one of the poorest health and social outcomes in Canada. In addition, African immigrants have the highest poverty rate in Alberta which, as a major determinant of health, may negatively affect their health outcomes. Research, service, and policy work focusing on the health of African immigrant children is especially important for population health in Canada, given that there are over 492,030 African migrants in the country (including over 56,000 in Alberta). To help address the health and social outcomes of African immigrant children in the province, we recently completed interviews with 14 African community leaders, 32 African immigrant parents, and 12 service providers and policy makers. This multi-stakeholder engagement session is being organized to maximize the usefulness of the findings to the African community. The event will bring together African community leaders, African immigrant parents, service providers, researchers and policy makers to discuss strategies to move research evidence into effective policies and services.

At the event, there will be welcome statements from policymakers and powerpoint presentations on African immigrant parenting, mental health, and gender relations by the research team. There will also be a panel presentation of diverse stakeholders and breakout sessions to discuss strategies to improve the health of African immigrant children. The event will be held on Saturday August 12, 2017 in room L1-190 of the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy building, 11405 87 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta. The Edmonton Clinic Health Academy building is located on the campus of the University of Alberta, on 114 street and on the opposite side of the road from the University Hospital near the LRT station. Registration for the event begins at 9am and proceedings begin at 10am and end at 4:30pm.
