Sunday Lecture Series at the Gallery with Dr. Daniel Mato, Professor Emeritus of Art History, University of Calgary

February 11, 2018 2:00 to 4:00 pm “REVOLUTIONS WITHIN THE REVOLUTION – EARLY RUSSIAN MODERN ART”

Breaking with the past, these artistic revolutionaries created abstract paintings, designed stage sets and architecture, shaped fashion, challenged authority and argued their theories to serve the Revolution which in time would consume them and their ideas. Though artists, designers and architects influenced the development of different schools of modernism in Europe, much of their work was hidden for generations only emerging in the recent past to be recognized and honoured in their homeland. On display at this talk will be 7 original art works by Russian artists of this period from Dr. Mato’s personal collection.

March 4, 2018 2:00 to 4:00 pm “MIRO AND SURREALISM – POETRY MADE VISIBLE – IMAGES GIVEN VOICE.” THE RELATIONSHIP OF MIRO WITH SURREALIST VISUAL ARTISTS AND WRITERS.
For many artists and writers in Europe during the 20th century, the rational world of appearances was questioned as a source for inspiration. One of the best examples of this artistic collaboration is A Toute Epreuve in which Joan Miro created a visual counterpoint to the poetry of Paul Eluard. A copy of this large and extraordinary folio with 80 prints by Miro will be on display to accompany the talk.
