About this event

This workshop is being offered to agencies and service providers in the domestic violence and sexual violence sector. It is not open to the general public.

Presentation Topic:

In the mid-1990s, the staff at the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter (CWES) became keenly aware that addressing family violence and abuse required a change in tactic. Prior to this time, attempts to address and prevent family violence focused primarily on supporting victims. While victim support is an important social response to addressing the injustice of family violence, the onus of change must instead lie with those who perpetrate family violence. Safety is increased when those who perpetrate violence are supported in making changes. Building on this belief, Men’s Counselling Service was born. The evolution of the program, informed by the feedback from both victims and perpetrators of family violence, has led to a clear set of assumptions and therapeutic strategies that will be shared with participants.

Presenter:

Anita Harder is a registered psychologist and the Clinical Advisor at Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter (CWES). Anita has been with CWES since 2011, during which time she has been involved in the delivery and oversight of a number of prevention and intervention initiatives including Men’s Counselling Services and Caring Dads groups. In her work with youth, men, women, couples and families, Anita aspires to honor dignity, provide and enhance positive social responses, and foster competency and confidence as clients move towards positive change. When she is not at work, Anita enjoys camping with her husband, children, and golden retriever. She also enjoys reading, travelling, and puttering around on her little piece of prairie paradise.
