Connect Charter School Council Presents

Supporting Student Success:

A discussion on resiliency, executive functioning, and inclusive practices.

In this session Connect staff will provide an overview of and best practices for teachers and parents around the topics of resiliency, executive functioning, and inclusive practices.

Presenters:

Dr. Chris Hooper

Chris is in his first year as an Assistant Principal at Connect and has been an administrator for 8 years. His has experience in working with students, school staff, and parents regarding various health and wellness topics. Recently, Chris completed his Doctor of Education focusing upon how to build resilience in students. This session will focus upon both student wellness and resilience.

Mrs. Abby Saadeh

Abby Saadeh is the Inclusive Practices Coach who works with students, parents, and teachers at Connect to ensure all students feel safe and supported in their learning. Abby believes that inclusion is a way of thinking and believing. She believes that inclusion fosters a culture of respect and belonging. With over 15 years of teaching experience in Canada, the United States, and South Korea, Abby has worked extensively with students with special needs and ELL learners. She has organized Inclusive Practices Networking days allowing teachers, administration, and special education teachers to come together to share best practices in Inclusion. Her work at Connect has involved implementing programs to support inclusion. Abby received the faculty nominated Mary Esther Lily Avis scholarship while enrolled in the B.Ed program at the University of Calgary. She also is certified in specified areas of inclusion such as assessments, ESL learners, coaching, and mental health.

Mr. Jared McKenzie

Jared McKenzie is currently a grade 8 Humanities teacher, his 6th year at Connect. Prior to moving to Calgary, he taught senior high ELA in Southern Alberta. With a background in evolutionary psychology, he is currently completing a Masters in Inclusive Education and Neuroscience. His thesis investigates how outdoor, experiential, and place-based education can support students’ executive functions.
