Understanding Hearing Loss and Hearing Technology (WP)

Presenter: Jacob Sulkers

This session is for educators, educational assistants and speech-language pathologists new to working with students with hearing loss in the classroom. Participants will learn the basics of reading an audiogram, learn about different types of hearing loss as well as gain a better understanding of the different kinds of hearing technology and how to manage them in the classroom.

Strategies to Support Students who use ASL (P)

Presenter: Deborah Goertzen

This session in intended for classroom and resource teachers, educational assistants, parents, speech-language pathologists and other clinicians working with students who are using American Sign Language (ASL). Participants will learn about the importance of ASL development and communication access as it relates to the challenges faced by students using ASL in the school setting. The importance of connections with peers, staff and other people who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing will be explained The benefits of ASL tutoring and having a Deaf adult role model come to the school will also be discussed, along with other strategies that provide continuous support for students who use ASL. Resources for signers/interpreters will also be shared.

Empowerment and Social Connections (WP)

Presenter: Cindy Neil

This session will give you the tools that students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) need to build positive self-esteem, learn to advocate for themselves, and prepare for a lifetime course in meeting their own needs. Students also often require direct teaching of social cues and of how to develop and grow strong, lasting social connections.

Students who are DHH have a disability that is invisible to the rest of the world. These students may appear to know and understand all that is happening around them because they smile or nod. This is usually not the case. As children grow into adolescence, there is a critical need to transfer ownership of the hearing loss from the adults to the adolescents in order to foster self-advocacy and empowerment.

Adaptations (P)

Presenter: Quan Lien

In this 40-minute presentation, the essentials of how to make a classroom accessible for the child who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) will be introduced. Participants will learn about how to adapt the environment in order to provide optimal learning conditions with visual support, strategic seating, effective verbal communication, amplification technology, and minimizing the negative effects of distance and background noise. Suggestions for how to counter these barriers and increase accessibility in order to support the student who is DHH will be discussed.

10:30-11:45 STUDENT PANEL

Student Panel (WP)

Moderator:

All conference attendees will hear from a panel of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Students will discuss their hearing losses, share their experiences and offer suggestions for school staff to best help them be successful in school and to meet their potential. The audience will have time to discuss what the students have shared and to pose questions to the students directly.

1:00-2:15 KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Strategies and Resources to Increase Reading Fluency, Vocabulary, Phonemic Awareness, and Comprehension for Learners who are d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing in K-12 Settings (WP)

Presenter: Dr. Joanna Cannon

This session will give a foundation of why increasing literacy skills for learners who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing is vital. Multiple strategies across fluency, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, and comprehension that may support literacy acquisition for learners who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing will be presented. Finally, resources for future reference as well as tips for professionals will be provided so attendees have some 'take-aways' that are beneficial in their support of these diverse learners.

Dr. Cannon will be presenting to us via videolink from British Columbia.

2:45-3:25 CONCURRENT SESSIONS

Supporting Spoken Language in the Classroom (WP)

Presenter: Janelle Kent

This session is for educators, educational assistants and speech-language pathologists new to working with students with hearing loss that are developing spoken language in the classroom. Participants will learn how to set realistic spoken language expectations as well as learn key strategies to support understanding and use of spoken language in the classroom.

Assessment Considerations for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (P)

Presenter: Anita Dyck

Ongoing assessment of developmental progress is critical to meet student needs; it provides the data for placement, service and programming decisions. When working with students who have a hearing loss, there are several complicating factors which could require adaptations to typical assessment procedures. First time teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing have been known to ask:

  • My student hears "almost everything" so are adaptations needed?
  • How much can my student hear?
  • How can I assess what my student has learned when I don't know ASL?
  • How can I make fair and appropriate assessments for a student with significant hearing loss while still maintaining the integrity of the high school course?

If you are wondering about one or more of these questions, this introductory session on assessment may be just what you need.
