Event description

Description

Every one of us is affected by the industry that creates and maintains our homes, our businesses, our schools, and the rest of our built environment. According to figures compiled by the Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC), the Canadian building industry is responsible for:

  • 12% of Canada’s non-industrial water use
  • 33% of Canada’s energy consumption
  • 35% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions
  • 35% of Canada’s landfill waste
  • 50% of Canada’s natural resources consumption

All of that adds up to tremendous room for improvement. On Tuesday, April 30th 2019 you’re invited to learn how builders and building operators are improving efficiency and reducing resource costs.

Learn about the latest developments in green building in Ontario, including new building standards like Net Zero and Passive Housing. See case studies of environmental and social initiatives that reduce environmental impact, while improving building performance and fostering healthier interiors for occupants.

Jeff Ranson (Greater Toronto Area Regional Director, CaGBC) will be giving an update on the state of green building in Ontario, including significant trends and the regulatory environment (with a particular focus on the Energy and Water Benchmarking and Reporting legislation that is currently being phased in).

Emma Cubitt (Principal, Invizij Architects) and Graham Cubitt (Director of Projects & Development, Indwell) will explore some extraordinary case studies of green building for larger buildings in the Hamilton area being done under the auspices of Indwell, a Christian charity that creates affordable housing communities that support people seeking health, wellness and belonging.

Our hosts Budget Demolition will speak about the work they are doing on the other side of the building industry: sustainable handling of construction waste.

Finally, we will wrap up with a short workshop to explore Green Building techniques that you can apply in your business or even residential environment.
