Live presentation hosted by Vancouver Film School

Two animation industry leaders, Brett VanderKist and Jim Inkster from Vancouver Film School demonstrate what animation is in 2018, taking you from animation's roots to present day. They will investigate a variety of styles and production methods used to create animation now. Feature Presentation starts at 7:30pm!

Brett VanderKist

Brett has worked as an animator since graduating from Capilano University’s Commercial Animation program in 2003. Originally trained in classical animation, Brett transitioned to animating with Flash with his first commercial project at Atomic Cartoons (Atomic Betty). After Atomic Cartoons, Brett worked at Bardel Entertainment on several TV-series (Edgar and Ellen, Wow Wow Wubbzy). While at Bardel, he transitioned to CG animation on the Maya animated TV series Zeke’s Pad and returned a few years later for Planet Sheen. He has worked for Nitrogen Studios (Thomas and Friends), DHX Media (George of the Jungle, Kid Vs Kat), Piranha Games (MechWarrior cinematics), and Klei Entertainment (cinematics for Sugar Rush and Mark of the Ninja). He has also authored two courses for PluralSight (12 Principles of Animation in Maya, and Animating a Walk Cycle in Maya), and has been teaching animation since 2007.

Jim Inkster

Instructor - Digital Production Supervisor

Jim began his career as a cell painter in 1995 on Gary Larson's Tales from the Far Side II. He moved to Mercury Filmworks as Paint Supervisor and Composite Supervisor on a variety of children's series.

Over the past 12 years at Vancouver Film School he has worked as the Digital Production supervisor of the Classical Animation Program. In this role he has mentored over 600 students through the final stages of color production, compositing and delivery. He has developed a wide set of digital tools for these hand drawn animated films to look as unique as their creators.
