Event description
Pianists Carson Becke and Suren Barry are joined by percussionists Zac Pulak and Dominique Moreau for a program of Bartók and Stravinsky.

About this Event

Following their 2019 Brahms Requiem collaboration with the Ewashko Singers, the Becke-Barry piano duo returns to Pontiac Enchanté, joining forces with Ottawa-based percussionists Zac Pulak and Dominique Moreau for a program that begins with Bartók's highly original and challenging Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion.  Written in 1937, it features a melding of Hungarian folk tunes and rhythms with an almost jazz-like rhythmic drive, supported by a large battery of percussion.  Bartok was an admirer of Stravinsky's incorporation of folk influences into his scores, his ballets The Firebird (1910), Petrouschka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913) in particular.  These three works have remained Stravinsky's most popular to date.  Of the three, The Firebird is the most triumphantly melodic, and its glorious music is presented here in a new arrangement for two pianos by the London-based Russian pianist, Dmitri Alexeev.  Mr. Alexeev has kindly granted Becke and Barry permission to give the Canadian premiere of the arrangement.
