Event description
A symposium to dialogue on Crime and its Impacts on the African Youth in Winnipeg Inner City.

About this Event

The Manitoba African Film Festival Inc. presents its 3rd Annual African Film Festival in Manitoba (AM-FM) from May 8 to 10, 2020. The theme of this year’s festival is “Crime and Films”. The symposium will be held on May 9.

Manitoba and Winnipeg consistently have among the highest levels of crime and youth gang activity when compared to other provinces and cities in Canada. Young adults, especially African youths who live in the inner city of Winnipeg are often criminalized or are victims of crimes. While there are many factors that contribute to the vulnerability of this group such as poverty, there are specific gaps especially in the areas of a coordinated gang exit prevention strategy or program to address these concerns.

The symposium creates a platform for dialogue amongst policy makers, community activists, actors, Winnipegers, and government officials to discuss these issues and to begin the debate towards creating coordinated exit strategies for gang members or victims of crime in Winnipeg.
