Event description

Description

Tai Chi Level 1: $70 for 7 weeks, Tuesdays @ 7:30pm - one more spot left!
Tai Chi Level 2 - sold out

"This low-impact, slow-motion exercise, has you going without pausing through a series of motions named for animal actions — for example, "white crane spreads its wings" — or martial arts moves, such as "box both ears." As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention — as in some kinds of meditation — on your body sensations. Tai chi differs from other types of exercise in several respects. The movements are usually circular and never forced, the muscles are relaxed rather than tensed, the joints are not fully extended or bent, and connective tissues are not stretched. Tai chi can be easily adapted for anyone, from the most fit people to those confined to wheelchairs or recovering from surgery." Our instructor Mu Chun Chen guides a small class helping you reduce your physical and mental stress with this form of "Meditation in Motion".

TAI CHI Levels 1 & 2 are offered at Reset Wellness on Whyte in 8 week series, one class a week, where you gradually learn 37 steps of Yang's Tai Chi - this series will help you improve your balance, strength, coordination, cognitive function, sense of health and relaxation. This series is perfect for beginners. To attend Level 2 you must have been to Level 1 course at Reset Wellness, or participated in an equivalent Level 1 series. Contact us directly to find out more.

FAQs

What is tai chi? Why was it started?

T'ai-chi ch'uan was developed as a martial art and longevity exercise between 700 and 300 years ago. It still is taught as both a martial art and longevity art. As early as the 1930's it was found to have varied and profound health benefits. Today it is primarily practiced as a "Mind-body" and Health Promotion exercise. It is one of the best stress reduction methods. It is a low intensity exercise, low impact, suitable to people of all ages and fitness levels. If you can walk, you can practice tai chi.

What is Yang's style Tai Chi?

The Yang family first became involved in the study of t'ai chi ch'uan (taijiquan) in the early 19th century. The founder of the Yang-style was Yang Lu-ch'an (楊露禪), aka Yang Fu-k'ui (楊福魁, 1799–1872), who studied under Ch'en Chang-hsing starting in 1820. Yang became a teacher in his own right, and his subsequent expression of t'ai chi ch'uan became known as the Yang-style, and directly led to the development of other three major styles of t'ai chi ch'uan (see below). Yang Lu-ch'an (and some would say the art of t'ai chi ch'uan, in general) came to prominence as a result of his being hired by the Chinese Imperial family to teach t'ai chi ch'uan to the elite Palace Battalion of the Imperial Guards in 1850, a position he held until his death.
