Storytellers
Our storytellers will share personal accounts of trial, failure and success that they have experienced while protagonists in the story of sustainability.
Rob Kim, Career Strategist, Faculty of Land and Food Systems, UBC
I am passionate about the transformative effects of education. I love the challenge of taking an idea and presenting it to others in a manner that compels them to take action or change their behaviours. I believe that small things matter--from the way we treat each other and how we treat our world. I believe it is through a collective action of small steps that we can create change. I approach the ways that I can choose to be sustainable and then use programs or education to amplify those actions. I currently work as a career strategist for the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. The actions that I take to support students and get them connected to their dreams of tackling the pressing issues of food waste or climate change is the way that I believe I contribute to a more sustainable world.
Cheryl Ng, Communications and Engagement Coordinator , Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning, UBC
I am fascinated about what connects people to nature. My work revolves around engaging the public on nature-related issues and creating opportunities for urban residents to get in touch with nature - both for their personal well-being and for the future of our planet.
As Communications and Engagement Coordinator at the Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning, University of British Columbia, I lead the Cool 'Hood Champs program, a fun and interactive training program for neighbourhood climate champions. My other roles include developing marketing/publicity materials for public events and managing partnerships with external stakeholders.
Julian Villanueva, Graduate Research Assistant, McGill University
Julian (he/him) is a Master of Urban Planning student at McGill University and a UBC alumnus. He graduated from the Global Resource Systems program in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems in 2018. While a UBC student, he spearheaded the creation of a new community garden on campus: the Agronomy Garden. He was also involved in the UBC Sustainability Initiative and in AMS Council. Julian's goal is to contribute to addressing global issues at the local and regional scale. He finds purpose in aiming to create a more equitable and sustainable society by democratizing spaces and processes in cities and by advancing evidence-based policy for equitable city-building.
Julian loves all corvids: ravens, crows, magpies, etc. They are playful, observant, and loving beings and we have a lot to learn from them. His second favourite animal is harbour seals: they are really cute and live in the sea and both of those things are really nice.
