Event description
It's been 10 years since the end of the war in Sri Lanka, please join us in our commemoration and call for justice and accountability.

About this Event

People for Equality and Relief in Lanka (PEARL) announces the launch of Tamil Resistance & Resilience in the Face of Genocide, a series of selected images from post-independence Sri Lanka, meant to highlight the Sri Lankan government’s atrocities against the Tamil people and to invite your calls for justice. The limited-run exhibits will be hosted in New York, London, and Toronto and will feature photographs by Tamil artists living in the North-East (homeland, or Eelam) and those in the diaspora.

PEARL is launching this global photo campaign in May, in light of the tenth anniversary of the Mullivaikkal Massacre that ended the war in Sri Lanka. 70,000–140,000 Tamil civilians were massacred in these final months, primarily due to the military’s intentional shelling of safe zones and extrajudicial executions.

Powerful and intimate photographs depict the Tamil genocide and other atrocities from the warzone while providing visual context for the root causes of conflict and the Tamil struggle. Images of the global diaspora protests in 2009 and the protests by the mothers of the disappeared in Eelam today stand testament to the resistance and resilience of the Tamil people. Throughout the exhibit, PEARL infographics offer a deeper understanding of the Mullivaikkal Massacre, other genocidal atrocities, and their legacy in Eelam, which the Sinhala-Buddhist government has heavily militarized, Sinhalized, and surveilled.

All images were selected with an eye to sensitively and respectfully portraying the massive loss felt by the Tamil people.

As a whole, the collection seeks to convey a Tamil-authored visual microcosm of struggling under the weight of genocide without justice. By doing so, it also aims to increase demands for justice for the Sri Lankan military’s atrocities.

This event is free and open to all members of the public. At the same time, PEARL specifically invites members of the Tamil diaspora to participate in this safe space for commemoration and community.
