About the Award
The TaxFighter Award is given out by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) to recognize Canadians who have made an outstanding contribution to the cause of taxpayer emancipation. This award has been given to elected officials, media personalities, academics and average citizens who have stood out and stood up in fighting for limited and accountable government in Canada.
About the Recipient
In 1998 the province of Alberta launched a tax review commission that led to implementation of the country’s first single rate tax. A low 10% income tax rate coupled with a generous basic personal exemption proved an economic boon for the province and inspired neighbouring provinces to reform their own tax systems ushering in a period of widespread prosperity.
Then-Alberta Treasurer, Stockwell Day both initiated the province’s tax review commission and implemented the single rate tax staring down critics who argued for “progressive” taxation.
The current Alberta government is eliminating the tax, but the CTF – a long time champion of lower, simpler and flatter taxes -- is proud to celebrate the tax reform’s architect and its undeniable success over 15 years.
About the Event
Please join us Thursday October 22 at the Manning Centre in Calgary for an after work reception celebrating 15 years of tax reform in Alberta and honouring the man who brought it to life: The Honourable Stockwell Day.
