Event description
These events are conceived with LYE’s initiative in mind: to change the way teachers and educators perceive further education in our field.

About this Event

English for Academic Purposes has blossomed into a substantial sub-field in our industry, yet there is still a lack of many practical resources for instructors to help get their students where they need to be. Further, we've found that the majority of resources that are out there don't help students navigate through discourse - they are mainly at sentence level. This affects all four skills, but when students are unable to process texts and identify patterns therein, their production also has similar pitfalls. We find this especially difficult in their writing.

For this reason, we've dedicated two Teacher Talking Time events to just that: strategies to help your students achieve their goals in academic writing.

The break-down is as follows:

Oct 3: The End-weight principle

Nov 7: Lexical Chains

Come prepared to learn, reflect, participate, and connect.

The session runs from 5:30 to 7:00, with a post-session analysis and discussion at a local pub afterwards.

A Little about Lexical Chains:

Lexical Chains are used to determine the central theme of text. As Scott Thornbury says, “...they carry the main thrust of the message…[and] these chains or threads of lexis ripple through texts and hold them together” (Thornbury, 2005).

The chains are also created using semantically related words:

  • lexical repetition
  • synonyms, near synonyms & antonyms
  • superordinate
  • general words

This strategy primes learners to make sense of a text before reading it and has them notice the mapping of lexical chains - or lexical repetition - throughout a text.

About Teacher Talking Time:

Teacher Talking Time is Learn YOUR English's teacher education series. We host 8-10 informal events annually with the aim of developing a community of teachers who love to learn and develop together. Our vision at LYE is to change how professional development is conducted in our industry, and this is one of the ways we hope to achieve that. Each session it three-pronged: theory, activities, and design/application.
