TEC Innovation District presents: Having Skin in the Game and why it's Necessary

Presented by: Kristina Milke and Ryan Heit

Why is it important for investors to see that you have invested some of your own cash into your company?...it’s really easy to lose someone else’s cash. Bring your coffee and join TEC VAs Kristina Milke and Ryan Heit for a discussion on the philosophy, optics, and guidelines for investing as a founder of your own company.

About the Presenters:

Kristina Milke:

A TEC Executive in Residence since 2014, Kristina Milke is the Deal Flow Director for the TEC Venture Angels. Kristina’s strong financial background includes a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Alberta and a Chartered Professional Accountant designation, in addition to having studied International Business at Sweden’s Uppsala Universitet. She is the president of K-GAR Consulting Inc., providing CFO and Business Advisory Services, as well as a founding mentor and Board of Advisors Member of the University of Alberta Venture Mentoring Services. Kristina is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta (CPA Alberta), the Women’s Executive Network (WXN), and the VA Angels. She previously served as Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Investopedia, and the Corporate Divisional Controller of Intuit Canada. Kristina’s favourite thing to do is travel, and looks forward to an annual trip.

Ryan Heit:

Ryan Heit is an Investment Coordinator, managing the investor network for TEC Venture Angels. Since joining TEC in 2013, Ryan has been a member of the Business Development team, screening companies for TEC Venture Angels and organizing regular investor events. Prior to TEC, Ryan was co-founder of Pacylex Pharmaceuticals and Prairie Noodle Shop. Ryan holds an MBA, Technology Commercialization Specialization as well as an MSc, Experimental Oncology. According to Ryan, one fun fact about himself is that he is not fun. Not even when he is rock climbing, running a successful noodle restaurant, or building home arcade machines out of Raspberry Pi computer parts.
