Event description

Description

JOIN US ON SEPTEMBER 16, 2017 AT THE YORK THEATRE!

At TEDxEastVan 2017, we want to celebrate the many facets that make us HUMAN: the connections and bonds we make with each other, the art that is born out of our experiences and imagination and our never-ending desire to learn and explore.

There are magnificent things happening all around us through normal human beings - and these are the stories we want to tell. Our speaker topics will touch upon what our collective future will look like, from the latest scientific, technological and medical advances, while also digging into the facets that make up our identities - gender, religion, and nationalism.

We will bring thinkers, dreamers, explorers and scientists together for one day to talk about the trials and tribulations of being human, and to capture the essence of the human experience - our ability to empathise, to belong and to love.

TED is a recognized brand that avoids politics/religion/corporate agendas, crossing boundaries in gender, age, culture, and discipline, which appeals to and engages people with multiple interests in an environment that is non-threatening. The connection to the broader TED community is a resource for East Vancouver, for team members and for attendees of our event. It connects our city with others at an international level and at a very personal one and supports the pollination of ideas and actions across cultures and borders.

“Well, you know how after watching a TED Talk you walk away thinking “Whoa! That was amazingly thought provoking and inspirational and delivered in a remarkably eloquent and entertaining way”? TEDx is like that but instead of former presidents or Nobel Prize winning professors, TEDx is local, homespun (and organic?). While the TED Talk format is maintained – that means short but sweet talks and a bias-free, stimulating program – the speakers represent current movements and projects within the community.” ~ From TEDxCourtauldInstitute

“The difference between TED and TEDx events are that the former takes more of a global approach while the latter typically focuses on a local community that concentrates on local voices. “Officially, the ‘x’ in TEDx stands for independently organized TED event – but it’s more of a TED multiplied. It’s been the force that has taken TED across the planet and seeded all of these communities. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Chris Anderson explains, “and I’m absolutely in awe of that.”
